The holiday season is a time when most of us share the love with our family and friends. Meals On Wheels shares the love with our local seniors who would otherwise be all alone and hungry during the holidays. It’s only fitting that we are partnering with our friends at Subaru for the third year in a row for their “Share the Love” Event to raise funds to support Meals On Wheels. This is just one story of how we share the love here in our community.
Over 100 dedicated volunteers deliver more than 83,000 Meals On Wheels to homebound seniors each year in Missoula County. During the holidays this service becomes even more important. For many older adults in our community the holidays are especially lonely. Their spirits are often lifted, however, because of the generosity of community volunteers and donors.
Missoula Aging Services has a holiday tradition in which anonymous “Secret Santa’s” provide donations of small gifts for every Meals On Wheels client which are then delivered with their holiday meal. On the days the gifts are delivered, the volunteer drivers are slow to return to the office. For many of these homebound elders, it is the only gift under their tree. They frequently request that the driver stay with them while they open the package, so that they can experience the joy of the holidays with another person.
During the dark, cold and isolated Montana holidays, our seniors continue to receive not only a nutritious meal and a small gift, but also an important safety check and a holiday greeting. Because of those who help us celebrate the true spirit of the season, our older neighbors are reminded that they have not been forgotten.
