High school sophomore Cody is not your typical teenager. Cody is sage beyong his 15 years, thanks in part to a grandmother who has instilled in him a sense of civic duty and an unwavering faith in God and country. The matriarch and her protege are incredibly close and share an affection for fishing and a passion for their community – specifically the area’s elderly and disabled.
Whenever possible, Cody joins his grandmother Johnnie during her weekly route for Meals on Wheels. During this past spring break, he served as Johnnie’s “wingman” on her route. Johnnie said her grandson experienced his inaugural run four years ago. Cody’s grandmother’s enthusiasm is contagious. She has been delivering meals since October 1993.
“It’s an absolute joy,” Johnnie comments, adding that the clients along her route enrich her own life on a multitude of levels. “As I get older, I realize what history they have.”
Cody says he also shares his experiences with his friends. “Back when I first started, I talked about it. I told my teachers, and I don’t know if it had a great effect, but I know that one of my teachers now delivers!”
Jonnie and Cody are just one example of the many selfless volunteers that deliver meals every day. As our services continue to grow, the need for routes and volunteers also grows. And with summertime here, there is an even greater need for help. It is more important than ever for dedicated volunteers to check on our seniors as temperatures rise.
If you have an extra hour now, or this summer, please let us know if you are available to help. As you can see from Jonnie and Cody, it’s a wonderful experience to share with others, especially your kids or grandkids!
“They’re never too young to learn community service,” Johnnie says. “If someone doesn’t show them, they don’t know the need is out there.”
