Seniors We Serve

NorthamptonEvery day for the past two years, Helen looks forward to a visit from Bob, a volunteer at Meals On Wheels of Northampton County, who delivers meals to both Helen and her brother, Jim. At the age of 84, Helen lives in a farm house in Pennsylvania surrounded by 68 beautiful acres of farm land.

She and her husband purchased the farm 59 years ago. The farm is where they raised their two sons and farmed the land, growing barley, corn, alfalfa and even potatoes. Helen lovingly smiles when she says, “During the past 50 years, I have been caring for my brother who is challenged with Cerebral Palsy. He is 17 years younger than myself.”

As recently as two years ago, Helen did her own cooking and baking. After recovering from pneumonia, she had little interest in cooking. Then doctors discovered that her blood platelets were too high and prescribed medication to prevent the onset of a clot and possibility of a stroke or heart attack. Her family, being concerned about her nutrition, encouraged her to try Meals On Wheels. She now says, “I am so glad to receive meals. Without Meals On Wheels, I would never be able to live here in my home.” She then quickly adds, “I especially like the turkey and filling. You know, it doesn’t have to be Thanksgiving to enjoy a good turkey dinner.”
