The holiday season is a time when most of us share the love with our family and friends. Meals On Wheels shares the love with our local seniors who would otherwise be all alone and hungry during the holidays. It’s only fitting that we are partnering with our friends at Subaru for the third year in a row for their “Share the Love” Event to raise funds to support Meals On Wheels. This is just one story of how we share the love here in our community.
Although only 44 years of age, Tammy qualified for our program because of her disability and the fact that she has no family in the area. Tammy suffers from multiple sclerosis and is confined to a wheelchair. On her first delivery visit, our Blue Ledge MOW volunteer, Ashley Poole, found Tammy sprawled across her doorstep. Her cat had escaped and the only way Tammy had of going after it was crawling on her hands and knees. From then on Tammy became more than a client to Ashley, who immediately arranged to have a ramp installed to give Tammy wheelchair access to the outdoors, paying for the materials herself. Since then Ashley and her fellow volunteers have become a much needed resource for Tammy. Ashley (or a fellow volunteer when Ashley is unavailable) regularly takes Tammy’s cat and dog to the vet; and Ashley makes sure that Tammy is supplied with transportation to her specialist in Roanoke, over 50 miles away. Although small, Blue Ledge Inc is really a full service Meals on Wheels program, and Ashley, now volunteer director (as well as full-time working professional and mother of four), is the spirit of that program.
